US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Director John Ratcliffe traveled to Moscow on Tuesday for meetings with Russian officials, CBS News reported, citing sources familiar with the matter.

It would be the first known visit to the Russian capital by a US intelligence chief since Ratcliffe's predecessor, William Burns, held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in November 2021.

The Russia visit also appears to be Ratcliffe's first as CIA director, though he has maintained contact with his Russian intelligence counterparts, according to the report.

Ratcliffe's visit comes as US-mediated efforts to end the Ukraine crisis remain largely stalled, with Moscow and Kiev still far apart on key issues.

Neither Washington nor Moscow has so far confirmed the visit.
