Death toll from Delhi's building collapse rises to 7

NEW DELHI, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- The death toll in Sunday's multi-storey building collapse in the Indian capital's Satya Niketan area rose to seven on Monday.

While one person was rescued alive from under the debris this morning, one dead body was also found, pushing the death toll to seven. A total of 12 people have been rescued from the building's debris over the past 24 hours and are receiving treatment at local hospitals.

The collapsed building was reportedly 50 years old and was allegedly built in violation of local bye-laws. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said a structural audit of all nearby buildings would be carried out soon and those responsible for allowing such buildings to be built and made available for students to rent would be held accountable.

The chief minister also stated that a building adjoining the ill-fated building would be demolished soon, since it was in a dilapidated condition.

Meanwhile, hearing an urgent public interest litigation on Monday, the Delhi High Court stated that besides the local civic authority, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, the Delhi University was also responsible for failing to provide proper accommodation for outstation students.
