Singapore faces high terrorism threat amid global conflicts: report

SINGAPORE, Sept. 10 (Xinhua) -- Singapore continues to face a high terrorism threat, with the country and its interests remaining attractive targets for terrorist elements, the Internal Security Department said on Thursday.

The department said in its terrorism threat assessment report that terrorist groups including al-Qaeda and the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria continue to recruit supporters online and inspire attacks around the world, while conflicts in the Middle East have heightened the risk of attacks beyond the conflict zones and contributed to radicalization.

The potential return of foreign terrorist fighters to Southeast Asia is also adding to the threat across the region.

The report also highlighted that in Southeast Asia, Islamist extremism remains a concern, while far-right and nihilistic violent extremist narratives are gaining traction and have featured in several recent attacks.
