Wildfire forces evacuation of more than 200 on Croatian island of Brac

ZAGREB, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- A large wildfire burning on the Croatian island of Brac for days has spread toward villages and tourist facilities overnight, prompting the evacuation of more than 200 people, local media reported Sunday.

Fanned by strong winds, the fire advanced toward the town of Milna, prompting authorities to activate an early warning system for residents. More than 200 people were evacuated as a precaution.

Chief Firefighting Commander Slavko Tucakovic told local media that no one had suffered serious injuries, although some people had inhaled smoke. No serious health consequences had been reported so far.

Croatia has been hit by a string of major wildfires this summer amid unusually hot and dry weather. A massive fire that broke out near the coastal town of Omis in southern Croatia in August claimed three lives in one of the deadliest wildfire incidents the country has seen in recent years.
