HANOI, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) -- Vietnamese telecommunications companies will officially shut down 2G mobile networks nationwide from Wednesday, the Vietnam News Agency reported Tuesday.

The shutdown is not expected to affect the majority of users, as most subscribers have already switched to phones supporting newer mobile technologies during a nearly two-year transition period, the report said.

2G technology was introduced in Vietnam in 1993, when telecom operator MobiFone Corporation began operations.

Vietnam's 3G networks are expected to be phased out from September 2028.
