France's CPI rises 2.4 pct in August

PARIS, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) -- France's consumer price index (CPI) rose 2.4 percent year on year in August, accelerating from 2.1 percent in July, according to data released by the French National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (Insee) on Tuesday.

The acceleration of inflation was mainly driven by faster increases in energy prices, Insee said. Energy prices soared 16.7 percent in August from a year earlier, up from 12.6 percent in July. Food prices also went up 1.1 percent annually from 1 percent in July, while service prices fell 1.9 percent from 2.2 percent.

On a monthly basis, the CPI rose 0.7 percent in August, following a 0.6 percent rise in July. The growth was mainly driven by seasonal rises in manufactured goods prices and further increases in energy and food prices.

Manufactured goods prices rose 1.6 percent from the previous month, following a 2 percent decline in July, with clothing and footwear prices jumping 7.3 percent after dropping 9.8 percent in July amid summer sales. Energy prices increased 3.4 percent from 2.3 percent in July, while food prices rose 0.4 percent from 0.1 percent in July.

Core inflation stood at 1.1 percent year on year in August, down from 1.3 percent in July, Insee said.
