Lucas Museum in Los Angeles opens to public

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) - The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art opened to the public Tuesday in Los Angeles, offering visitors a new institution dedicated to visual storytelling across cultures and centuries.

Located in the city's Exposition Park, the museum was designed by Chinese architect Ma Yansong and founded by American filmmaker and "Star Wars" creator George Lucas and his wife Mellody Hobson.

According to the museum, it is the first institution dedicated to the tradition of visual storytelling, tracing its history across cultures and centuries from prehistoric cave paintings to illustration, comics, cinema and murals.

Ma said the building's biomorphic, dream-like form was intended to blur the boundaries between indoors and outdoors, and between architecture and the surrounding park.

The museum also has a public research library housing general research collections, special collections and archives, as well as educational and public programming spaces.

Its inaugural exhibitions feature more than 1,300 works. The collection includes concept designs, props and costumes from the "Star Wars" films, as well as works by artists such as Vincent van Gogh, George Bellows and Jacob Lawrence.
