S. Korean president calls for early resumption of DPRK-US dialogue

SEOUL, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- South Korean President Lee Jae Myung on Tuesday expressed the hope that the long-suspended dialogue between the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and the United States would resume without delay.

"We will lay the groundwork for this to develop into a dialogue among the parties aimed at ending the war on the Korean Peninsula and transitioning to a peace regime," Lee said in a speech at the general debate of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Also on Tuesday, Lee held talks with U.S. President Donald Trump in New York, where the two sides agreed to maintain close communication on achieving peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula, according to Yonhap News Agency.

South Korean National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac told media in New York that the two leaders met for about 30 minutes, and Trump reaffirmed his willingness to engage in dialogue with the DPRK during the talks.
