South Yorkshire Police said at 1:35 p.m. (1235 GMT) they received reports that a man had entered a tiger enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park near the city of Doncaster.

"The tiger subsequently attacked the man, resulting in serious injury," the police said in a statement.

Yorkshire Ambulance Service said it had sent two road ambulances and an air ambulance to the scene.

"Emergency services attended, and sadly, despite the best efforts of medical personnel, the man was pronounced dead at the scene," the force added.

Police said the tiger was not injured during the incident and remained inside the enclosure after the attack. There was no wider risk to members of the public, and all visitors had been evacuated.

The man's family is aware and is being supported by specialist officers, the police said.

Yorkshire Wildlife Park confirmed that a "serious incident" had taken place at its tiger enclosure, triggering the closure of the attraction.

The park was due to be closed on Sunday.

Yorkshire Wildlife Park's "Land of the Tigers" area features a 300-meter raised walkway that lets visitors view its Amur tigers in an enclosure that includes woodland, grassland and a waterfall pool.

There are estimated to be only around 500 of the endangered subspecies left in the wild.
