Real Madrid apologizes to Chinese people over Mbappe's remarks
Real Madrid has formally apologized to the Chinese people over controversial remarks by its player Kylian Mbappe, sending a letter to China Media Group (CMG) through La Liga on Wednesday, CMG reported.
In the letter, the Spanish football club expressed deep respect for China, its history, culture and people, as well as the millions of Chinese fans who support the club. It also included Mbappe's earlier public apology, in which the player expressed regret over his remarks and reaffirmed his respect for the Chinese people.
Real Madrid reiterated its commitment to respect, coexistence and understanding among different cultures, saying it hoped to strengthen its ties of friendship with China and its people.
The apology follows a sharp rebuke from CMG earlier on Wednesday. A CMG spokesperson said Mbappe's remarks had crossed a red line and went beyond the bounds of freedom of expression. The spokesperson added that Real Madrid, as the player's club, also bore responsibility for the incident, rejecting the club's earlier explanation that Mbappe had no intention of causing offense and was entitled to express his personal views.
The spokesperson said the remarks had hurt the feelings of the Chinese people and would face opposition from across Chinese society, adding that CMG would not accept the club's stance until it offered an adequate apology.
