The Israeli army ended an 11-day military operation in the southern West Bank city of Hebron on Monday, leaving widespread destruction and damage to residential buildings and infrastructure, according to Palestinian sources.

The sources said residents began returning to their homes after being displaced at the Israeli army's request at the start of the operation, which was launched following an Oct. 23 shooting attack that killed two Israeli soldiers.

Dozens of vehicles carrying families, including women and children, and their belongings were seen returning to the affected neighborhoods, with residents honking their horns in celebration.

Rashid al-Ja'bari, wearing a Palestinian keffiyeh and leaning on a cane, told Xinhua that the destroyed homes would be "rebuilt from scratch."

"This is our land, and we will not leave it, no matter what destruction and devastation the Israeli occupation inflicts," he said.

Hebron Governor Khaled Dudin confirmed the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the city, saying that Palestinian security forces had assumed control of its neighborhoods, villages and towns, while relevant authorities were working to ensure residents' safe return.

According to the Hebron Municipality, the operation displaced or affected more than 3,300 people. It also resulted in the demolition of 15 homes and other structures, damage to infrastructure and economic activities, and disruptions to education.
