CAIRO, Nov. 8 (Xinhua) -- Several passengers were injured when two trains collided in Egypt's Giza governorate on Sunday, causing some carriages to derail, the Egyptian National Railways Authority said.

The collision occurred when a train on the Giza-Fayoum route hit the rear of another on the Cairo-Aswan route, the authority said in a statement, noting that the injured have been taken to hospital.

Emergency teams and cranes were dispatched to clear the site and move the remaining carriages to restore services in both directions as quickly as possible, the authority said.

Egypt's state-run Akhbar El-Yom newspaper reported that 60 people were injured in the accident, according to a preliminary tally.
