LUSAKA, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- About 700 families had so far been displaced from their homes by flash floods caused by heavy rains in many districts of Zambia, the country's disaster management and mitigation agency said on Tuesday.
The Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit said the eastern part of the country had been hardest hit with about 350 households affected with other parts of the country accounting for the remaining figures.
Chanda Kabwe, National Coordinator of the disaster management and mitigation agency, said about 600 roofs of both public and private infrastructure had been blown-off while critical bridges have been washed away.
The government, he said, had mobilized resources for relief efforts to help the affected families.
Zambia has experienced heavy rains in the 2019/2020 rainy season which resulted in flashfloods.
On Monday, President Edgar Lungu appealed for international aid to help the country tackle the effects of floods.
