US automaker Ford on Sunday excoriated Trump’s suggestion to make its new model domestically instead of importing from China.

Hell no, Ford said.

“This is just the beginning. This car can now be BUILT IN THE U.S.A. and Ford will pay no tariffs!” Trump said in a tweet earlier Sunday, after citing the automaker’s announcement to have scrapped plans to sell the Focus Active, a roomy China-built hatchback, in the US because of the prospect of higher tariffs.

The Dearborn-based company issued a statement in response: “It would not be profitable to build the Focus Active in the US given an expected annual sales volume of fewer than 50,000 units and its competitive segment."

The Focus Active was meant to take the place of the Focus series in the US because a plan to phase out the entry-level car as it shifts its production to pickups and SUVs, Detroit Free Press reported. Focus Active was scheduled to go on sale in late summer of 2019.

This is the second tweet in two days from Trump calling over US companies whose products were threatened because they were made in China, according to the New York Times. On Saturday, he called on Apple to make iPhones in the US if it doesn’t want to pay import tariffs.

In a letter to the US Trade Representative on Wednesday, Apple said that the tariffs would harm growth and competitiveness and cause it to raise prices on US consumers for their products.

“Tariffs increase the cost of our US operations, divert our resources, and disadvantage Apple compared to foreign competitors,” Apple wrote, adding that tariffs “will ultimately reduce the economic benefit we generate for the United States.”
