BEIRUT, March 2 (Xinhua) -- Japanese Deputy Justice Minister Hiroyuki Yoshiie said here on Monday that former Nissan chief Carlos Ghosn must stand trial in Japan.

"We told the Lebanese government that it is natural for Ghosn to stand trial in Japan," the Japanese official said at a news conference held in Beirut.

Yoshiie added that he has agreed with the Lebanese authorities to cooperate on this matter without specifying the role of Lebanon in this regard.

Yoshiie met earlier in the day with Lebanese Justice Minister Marie-Claude Najm and Foreign Minister Nassif Hitti.

He also met with Lebanese President Michel Aoun while expressing his country's keenness to boost ties with Lebanon and cooperate on Ghosn's issue.

Meanwhile, Aoun said that there is no extradition treaty between Lebanon and Japan, as Lebanon has contacted the Japanese authorities with regard to Ghosn's issue upon his arrest but without receiving any feedback from Japanese side.

The president added that Ghosn had entered Lebanon "legally" using a French passport and a Lebanese identity card.
