BEIRUT, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) -- Heavy clashes erupted on Tuesday between demonstrators and the Lebanese army near the Central Bank of Lebanon amid attempts by protesters to block roads in the area, local news agency Lebanon Debate reported.

Protesters demonstrated against the economic and financial policies in Lebanon while asking for a complete change.

They have also distributed papers to passengers asking them to stop paying taxes and fees to the government and refrain from paying back their loans to banks until they are able to get their full rights.

Lebanon has been witnessing nationwide protests for more than two months due to the failing policies of successive governments which led to the impoverishment of people and the steep rise in unemployment.

The new government that should be formed soon by the newly appointed Prime Minister Hassan Diab is expected to take quick measures to restore economic and financial confidence while preventing further deterioration in the country.
