New Delhi (People's Daily) - India ranks among the most unequal countries in the world, warns a recent report released by charity organization Oxfam India on Thursday.

The report, titled “The Widening Gaps: India Inequality Report 2018,” said the economic inequality in Indian society has been worsening over the last 30 years due to the “lopsided” policies of successive governments.

The super-rich in India have cornered a huge part of the wealth created through crony capitalism and inheritance, while the share of wealth of people from bottom of the economic ladder has shrunk, reported Indian newspaper The Pioneer on Friday.

In 2017, India had as many as 101 billionaires, whose wealth accounts for 15 percent of the country’s gross domestic product, according to the Oxfam India report.

The report also showed that the wealth of the top one percent of India’s income earners has increased by over Rs 20.9 trillion (around $322 billion). On the other hand, the country’s poorest 670 million saw their income rise by just one percent in the last year.
