India's COVID-19 recovery rate leaped past 83 percent on Tuesday, as the number of recovered cases exceeded the new confirmed cases once again during the past 24 hours, said the federal health ministry.

According to an official statement, as many as 84,877 recoveries have been registered in the past 24 hours in the country, while the number of new confirmed cases stood at 70,589.

The total number of recoveries has touched 5,101,397, added the statement.

The sustained high number of recovered cases has led to further widening of the gap between active and recovered cases. Recovered cases exceed active cases (947,576) by more than 4.15 million. The recovered cases are 5.38 times the active cases ensuring that the recoveries were consistently rising.

The active COVID-19 caseload of the country presently was 15.42 percent of the total positive cases and was consistently declining, said the ministry's statement.

In the last 24 hours, a total of 70,589 new cases have been reported, even as 10 states accounted for 73 percent of the new confirmed cases. Maharashtra state continued to lead this tally with more than 11,000 cases.

The above mentioned 10 states accounted for 78 percent of the deaths in the last 24 hours, out of which Maharashtra reported more than 23 percent (180 deaths) followed by Tamil Nadu with 70 deaths.
