NEW DELHI, June 5 (Xinhua) -- India's tax collection during the month of May stood at over 1 trillion Indian Rupees (over 14 billion U.S. dollars), more than 65 percent compared to the same month last year, said an official statement on Saturday.

The figures assume significance amid the lockdowns and curfews imposed by several states in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic's second wave, thus adversely impacting a large number of manufacturing, industrial and commercial activities across the country.

The statement issued by the federal Finance Ministry said that the government revenues during the month from import of goods was 56 percent higher and the revenues from domestic transactions (including import of services) were 69 percent higher than the revenues from these sources during the same month last year.

This was the eighth month in a row when tax revenues had crossed 1 trillion Indian Rupees mark.
