NEW DELHI, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- Indian capital city New Delhi has figured at the bottom of tap water quality ranking list released by federal government on Saturday, officials said.

However, Mumbai city in Maharashtra, known as financial hub of India tops the ranking list.

The rankings were released by India's federal consumer affairs minister Ram Vilas Paswan.

"In Delhi, all the 11 samples drawn from various places did not comply with the requirements of the Indian Standard and failed on several parameters," a government spokesman said. "All the 10 samples drawn from Mumbai were found to comply with the requirements."

Eleven samples taken from Delhi failed on 19 parameters.

According to officials, tests that were conducted on various parameters included organoleptic and physical tests, chemical test, toxic substances and bacteriological tests in the first stage.

Paswan while releasing the list said objective of the ranking was not to demotivate anyone but to encourage governments to ensure quality potable tap water for all citizens.

India government has set a target of providing piped water to every household in the country by 2024.
