Indian railways to impose fine for not wearing masks on trains, railway premises

NEW DELHI, April 17 (Xinhua) -- Indian railways Saturday announced it would impose a fine of 500 Indian rupees (6.71 US dollars) on anyone found not wearing face masks inside railway premises and trains.

The order has been issued in wake of the rising COVID-19 cases in the country. The measure will be implemented for six months till further notice.

Local governments in states have been issuing orders imposing fines on people for not wearing face masks in public spaces.

Recently the Uttar Pradesh government announced a first-time offender fine of 1,000 rupees (about 13 U.S. dollars) on a person found not wearing a face mask and a fine of 10,000 rupees (134 U.S. dollars) on repeated offenders.

Federal health ministry on Saturday morning said 234,692 new COVID-19 cases and 1,341 related deaths were registered in the past 24 hours across the country. This is the highest single-day spike since the start of the pandemic.
