JAKARTA, Dec. 31 (Xinhua) -- The Anak Krakatau volcano situated in the Sunda Strait in western Indonesia on Tuesday spewed a column of volcanic ash by up to one km into the sky, the National Volcanology Agency said.

The eruption occurred at 6:51 a.m. local time with the ash spreading to the south of the crater, the agency said in a statement.

Tourists and residents have been barred from entering the areas in the radius of two km from the crater as the volcano's alert level has been at the third highest.

Anak Krakatau is situated near a shipping lane for businesses and tourist sites.

More than 400 people, mostly tourists, were killed after a tsunami triggered by Anak Krakatau's eruption in the coastal areas of the Sunda Strait in December 2018.

Anak Krakatau is one of the 129 active volcanoes in Indonesia.
