TEHRAN, May 27 (Xinhua) -- Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Wednesday called on the newly-elected parliament to focus on improving the country's economic situation, according to the leader's official website.

In a message to the opening session of the new parliament, Khamenei said that the lawmakers should pay particular attention "to resolve the livelihood problems of underprivileged classes of society to promote social justice."

Besides, "employment, production, the value of national currency, inflation" and a reduction in the share of crude oil incomes in the financial resources of the administration should be at the core of the parliament's concerns," said Khamenei.

To implement the economic goals drawn for the parliament, the lawmakers should consider the guidelines for "resistance economy policy," he added.

Economy of resistance, outlined by the Iranian top leader, calls for reliance on national human, scientific and economic resources as well as reduction in dependency on oil revenues in response to external economic shocks including western sanctions.

On the day, Iran's new parliament for the next four years kicked off.

The 11th parliamentary elections of the Islamic republic were held on February 21.

The Iranian parliament has 290 members who are elected by the people for four-year terms.
