Despite the drop the benchmark Nikkei stock index logged its highest year-end close since 1990 on the final trading day of the year.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 181.10 points, or 0.76 percent, from Friday to close the year at 23,656.62.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, lost 11.82 points, or 0.68 percent, to finish at 1,721.36.

Metal product, electric gas and power, and machinery-linked issues comprised those that declined the most by the close of play.
