Male panda Jiao Qing at the Berlin Zoo celebrated his 8th birthday with a three-story birthday cake on Sunday, chinanews.com reported.

Jiao Qing arrived in Berlin in June 2017 together with a female panda Meng Meng, who celebrated her 5th birthday on Tuesday, from the panda breeding and research base in Chengdu, Southwest China's Sichuan province.

The birthday present was a delicious ice cream cake with beetroot and sweet potato, decorated with apple hearts. The candles were carved from bamboo and carrots by zookeepers and trainees.

On Sunday, an article titled "Happy Birthday Jiao Qing!" was post in the "panda blog" column of the official website of the zoo, saying this was a "panda crazy week".

A survey showed the panda pair has become the main reason for the rise in tourists over the past year. Zoo and Tierpark Director Andreas Knieriem told chinanews.com he expected the pandas would continue to attract more visitors.

Jiao Qing and Meng Meng are the only pair of pandas in Germany.
