AMMAN, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- Jordan on Tuesday decided to go back on its previous decision to reopen its airports for international flights.

Jordanian Minister of State for Media Affairs Amjad Adaileh said in a statement that the decision to reopen the airports for international flights on Aug. 5 has been postponed based on recommendations from the anti-pandemic committee.

In its announcement last month, the Jordanian government said that flights would be allowed between Jordan and certain countries, where the pandemic is under control, starting on Aug. 5.

"Although reopening of airports for international commercial flights will be postponed, the airports will remain open for flights to bring back Jordanians from several countries and for emergency flights to allow non-Jordanians to leave the country back to their countries," Adaileh said.

"The decision to postpone resuming flights with certain countries as it was initially planned came after the rapid increase in coronavirus cases globally," the minister added.

Also, Jordan reported six new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, all passengers coming from abroad, raising the total number of confirmed cases in the country to 1,224.

China has supported Jordan's fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. On May 31, China donated a batch of medical supplies to Jordan to help combat the coronavirus.
