The two suspects in the May 2018 poisoning of former spy Sergei Skripal have nothing to do with Russian President Vladimir Putin or the government, a Kremlin spokesman was quoted by the Interfax news agency on Sunday.

"The fact is that neither Petrov nor Boshirov have anything to do with Putin, or the Kremlin of course," Peskov was quoted.

Britain has said that two Russian men, identified as Alexander Petrov and Ruslan Boshirov used the nerve agent Novichok to attack the Skripals. The Russian government has denied any involvement.

On September 12, Putin said that the two men were civilians and that there was "nothing special and criminal" about them.

The accused during an interview with Russian television station, Russia Today, pleaded innocence describing themselves as tourists who had flown to London for fun and visited the city of Salisbury to see its cathedral.

While UK Prime Minister Theresa May's spokesman said, the interview contained "lies and blatant fabrications" and called it "an insult to the public's intelligence."
