An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1 hit in eastern Peru, close to its borders with Brazil and Bolivia, the United States Geological Survey(USGS) said.

The epicenter was monitored at 10.95 degrees south latitude and 70.75 degrees west longitude.

The quake struck at a depth of 609.5 km. There was no immediate information on damage or casualties.
