Malaysia reports 6,440 new COVID-19 cases, 74 new deaths

KUALA LUMPUR, June 18 (Xinhua) -- Malaysia reported 6,440 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Friday, bringing the total tally to 685,204.

Health Ministry Director-General Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a press statement that five of the new cases are imported and 6,435 are locally transmitted.

An additional 74 deaths from the coronavirus epidemic were meanwhile recorded in the Southeast Asian country, bringing the COVID-19 related death toll to 4,276.

An additional 6,861 recovered patients were discharged from hospitals in Malaysia, bringing the total number of recoveries from the pandemic to 615,326 or 89.8 percent of all cases.

Currently of the 65,602 active cases, 894 are being held in intensive care and 451 of them in need of assisted breathing, showed the official data.
