African countries that have reported more than 100 confirmed cases include: South Africa (554), Egypt (366), Algeria (230), Morocco (143), Tunisia (114) and Burkina Faso (114).

South Africa has seen a big jump in confirmed coronavirus cases, with the total now at 554 – up 152 from Monday’s report, said health minister Zweli Mkhize on Tuesday.

South Africa overtakes Egypt as the country with the highest number of confirmed cases in Africa.

South African president Cyril Ramaphosa announced a 21-day lockdown in an address to the nation on Monday, saying Africa’s most advanced economy needed to escalate its response to curb the spread of the outbreak.

“From midnight on Thursday, March 26, until midnight on Thursday, April 16, all South Africans will have to stay at home,” Ramaphosa said.
