Myanmar parliament approves 51.2 mln USD loan for upgrading rural roads

NAY PYI TAW, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar parliament Wednesday approved taking a loan worth 51.2 million U.S. dollars from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to upgrade roads in rural areas.

The loan will be used for the Rural Road and Access Project which is being managed by the Construction Ministry.

The project covers 27 bridges, 412 box culverts, causeways and other road infrastructures in Ayeyarwady and Magway regions, U Kyaw Lin, deputy minister for construction, told the parliament.

"If the loan contract can be signed by the end of December, 5.8 million U.S. dollars from the loan will be granted as a not-repayable financial assistance", said Deputy Minister U Maung Maung Win of Planning and Finance.

U Kyaw Lin also added that 80 percent of rural roads across Myanmar will be upgraded to be used in all weather conditions.
