SANTIAGO, July 28 (Xinhua) -- About 40,000 liters of diesel oil has been spilt off the far southern coast of Chile, the country's navy said Saturday.

Chilian mining company CAP reported Saturday that the spill occured at its onshore terminal on remote Guarello Island, about 250 km north of the port city Puerto Natales, and moved into the waters of the South Pacific.

Authorities have launched emergency and pollution responses. The control team is expected to reach the island Sunday.

An investigation as to the cause of the incident is underway.
