Russia registers over 10,000 new COVID-19 cases in 24 hours

MOSCOW, May 9 (Xinhua) -- Russia has reported 10,817 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, raising its total number of infections to 198,676, its coronavirus response center said in a statement on Saturday.

The single-day increase has been over 10,000 for seven consecutive days in the country, the center's data showed.

The death toll from the pandemic increased by 104 to 1,827, while 31,916 people have recovered, including a record of 5,308 over the last 24 hours, the statement said.

Moscow, the country's worst-hit region, confirmed 5,667 new cases in the past 24 hours, taking its total to 104,189.

Russia's consumer rights and human well-being watchdog said in a statement Saturday that about 242,000 people were under medical observation as of Friday.

More than 5.2 million lab tests for COVID-19 have been conducted across the country so far, it added.
