South Africa will continue fighting for international peace, a South African official said here Tuesday.

"We will continue to work on what we already started, particularly (through) the AU (African Union) and UN (United Nations) cooperation, to silence the guns and contribute to international peace and security," said Zaheer Laher, director general of International Coordination in the country's Department of International Relations and Cooperation, at a conference.

Our focus will be to prevent and resolve conflicts, and to implement the decisions of the UN Security Council, Laher said.

"As a member of the Security Council, we make contributions by (offering) statements and working methods. This gives us an opportunity to engage in the implementation of the commitment we have agreed on," he said.

In early January, South Africa assumed its seat as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the period 2019-2020.
