School knife attack in Slovakia leaves two dead, five injured

A knife-wielding man attacked a school on Thursday in the town of Vrutky in northern Slovakia, leaving the deputy headmaster and attacker dead and five others injured, local media reported.

According to reports, National Labor Inspectorate (NIP) spokesman Ladislav Kerekes said the deputy headmaster died from fatal injuries inflicted while he was trying to prevent the man from attacking students. 

The attacker was later shot and killed by the police.

According to news website Teraz.sk, five others were wounded, including a teacher, two students and two police officers.

Katarina Kapustova, spokeswoman for Martin University Hospital, said a teacher with serious injuries was hospitalized and the two policemen had minor injuries.

She added that two students were also hospitalized. A girl and a boy, both with serious injuries, were in the intensive care unit.

Slovak Interior Minister Roman Mikulec said other wounded are in a stable and non life-threatening condition.
