JAKARTA, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) -- A shallow quake has killed two people, injured three others and destroyed dozens of houses and buildings in Indonesia's eastern province of Maluku after the disaster struck off the territory a day earlier, an official said on Wednesday.

At least 30 houses and one mosque were rattled in Maluku province's capital of Ambon after a 5.1-magnitude quake jolted the area, Eva Tuhumuri, secretary of the Disaster Management Agency in the city told Xinhua by phone.

The quake with a depth of 10 km under the sea bed had the epicenter at 21 km northeast of Ambon city, according to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency.

Residents whose houses were damaged set up makeshift tents near their damaged houses, the official said.

Relief aid such as tents has been distributed to the quake-affected persons, he said.

Indonesia is prone to quakes as it lies on a vulnerable quake-impacted zone called "the Pacific Ring of Fire."
