LOS ANGELES, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) - A small plane crashed on a freeway Tuesday afternoon in Los Angeles County in western US state of California, said authorities.

Firefighters responded to the incident around 1:45 p.m. local time and the pilot of the plane was uninjured, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. 

No other vehicles were involved in the crash which resulted in the closure of the 101 Freeway.

Images and videos posted on social media by drivers on the scene showed a small plane with the markings of the WWII Nazi Luftwaffe crashed toward the center divider of the freeway, burning with smoke billowing out.

The plane was a North American AT-6, according to the aircraft's owner, the Van Nuys-based Condor Squadron, a nonprofit group founded in 1965 by a group of World War II fighter pilots, a local news outlet, City News Service, reported.

The pilot who has about 30 years of flying experience took off from Van Nuys Airport but eventually heard some loud pops from the engine and then lost power, California Highway Patrol (CHP) Capt. Johnny Starling was quoted as saying by City News Service.
