Los Angeles (People's Daily) - The city of Alhambra, located in the San Gabriel Valley in Southern California, hosted a free face mask event at the Alhambra Farmers Market on Saturday.

Alhambra Mayor Ross Maza, Vice Mayor David Mejia, former Mayor Stephen Sham, along with Alhambra Unified School District Board Member Wing Ho, were on hand to give away face masks to residents.

The federal government recently urged people to wear face masks to safeguard against COVID-19 and to prevent human transmission. Meanwhile, California officials also urged state residents to stay home, practice social distancing measures, and avoid non-essential travel.

Sham said the face mask donations were donated by the Chinese American United for Safer Communities.

"As a member of the community, Chinese-Americans have taken solid action to support others amid the virus outbreak," Sham said.

Sham urged more Chinese Americans to participate in philanthropic efforts to help their fellow neighbors amid this dark moment and continue donating more medical supplies to those in need.
