ST. PETERSBURG, May 25 (Xinhua) -- Russia's second largest city of St. Petersburg announced on Thursday that it would extend COVID-19 restrictions until Aug. 31, 2023.

According to a press release issued by the city administration, St. Petersburg governor Alexander Beglov signed a decree on the order of the city's chief state sanitary physician.

"All restrictions that have not been lifted will be extended until August 31," the press release said.

The existing coronavirus-related restrictions in the city ban public events and gatherings without special approval and recommend the wearing of masks in public places.
