A person was shot Thursday evening in the heart of downtown Washington and police then fired on and wounded a suspect three blocks away, according to two officials with knowledge of the incident, according to the Washington Post.

The shootings occurred at 8th and H streets in Chinatown and a few minutes later in front of the Grand Hyatt Washington at 11th and H streets. They came during the height of the rush hour commute and forced authorities to shut down several blocks to vehicles and pedestrians, the newspaper said.

Police were investigating two shooting scenes in bustling areas of the city — near the Gallery Place Metro Station and blocks away at a corner that includes the hotel, Capitol City Brewing Company and a Starbucks, said the newspaper.
