The global death toll from COVID-19 increased by 6,892 to 99,690 in the past 24 hours as of 10:00 CET on Saturday, according to the daily situation report released by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The report showed a total of 1,610,909 confirmed cases of COVID-19 were reported as of Saturday, an increase of 89,657 infections compared to the previous day.

The US recorded 1,920 deaths related to the novel coronavirus over the past 24 hours, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University as of 8:30 pm Saturday (0030 GMT Sunday). The outbreak has now claimed the lives of at least 20,506 people in the US, the most of any country. The US also leads the world in the number of confirmed infections with 527,111 by the Baltimore-based school's count.

The update for the last 24 hours raised the Spain’s overall number of fatalities to 16,606 and the number of confirmed cases to 163,027, according to the Johns Hopkins University tally.

Italy, the hardest-hit country in Europe with a population a fifth the size of the US, was also approaching the bleak marker, with 19,468 confirmed virus fatalities and 152,271 infections.

France has reported 130,727 infections and 13,832 deaths followed by Germany with 125,452 infections and 2,871 deaths.

The UK’s health ministry announced another 917 coronavirus hospital patients had died in the latest 24-hour period. It brings the total number of COVID-19 fatalities in British hospitals to 9,875, while the number of confirmed cases in the country climbed by 5,234 to 78,991.

Iran on Saturday reported 125 new deaths from the novel coronavirus, raising the overall toll in the Middle East's worst-hit country to 4,357. Health ministry spokesman told a news conference that 1,837 new infections had been confirmed in the past 24 hours, taking the total to 70,029.

The total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Turkey rose to 52,167, while the death toll surged to 1,101, Turkish Health Minister Fahrettin Koca tweeted on Saturday.

Belgium has recorded 3,346 fatalities from 28,018 infections.

Confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Switzerland increased to 25,107 with 1,036 deaths, Johns Hopkins reported.
