The global death toll from COVID-19 increased by 5,702 to 111,652 in the past 24 hours as of 10:00 CET on Monday, according to the daily situation report released by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The report showed a total of 1,773,084 confirmed cases of COVID-19 were reported as of Monday, an increase of 76,498 infections compared to the previous day.

The outbreak has now claimed the lives of at least 23,649 people in the US, the most of any country. The US also leads the world in the number of confirmed infections with 582,594, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University as of 3:41 pm BJT on Tuesday.

Spain is the second worst-hit country with 17,756 fatalities from 170,099 confirmed infections.

It is followed by Italy with 159,516 infections and 20,465 deaths, France with 137,877 infections and 14,967 deaths, Germany with 130,072 infections and 3,194 deaths and the UK with 89,571 cases and 11,329 deaths.

The health ministry of Iran on Monday announced another 111 coronavirus deaths and 1,617 new infections, bringing the official totals to 4,585 and 73,303, respectively.

Turkey has registered a total of 61,049 COVID-19 infections with nearly 1,300 deaths as of Monday.

Belgium has recorded 3,903 fatalities from 30,589 infections.

Confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Netherland increased to 26,712 with 2,833 deaths, Johns Hopkins reported.
