The global death toll from COVID-19 increased by 4,823 to 50,322 in the past 24 hours as of 10:00 CET on Friday, according to the daily situation report released by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The report showed a total of 972,303 confirmed cases of COVID-19 were reported as of Friday, an increase of 75,853 infections compared to the previous day.

The United States now has 276,995 confirmed cases of the new coronavirus as of 8:02 am BJT on Saturday, Johns Hopkins reported. The number of deaths is 7,406, according to AFP.

Italy, which recorded its first coronavirus death at the end of February, has 14,681 fatalities, with 119,827 infections and 19,758 people recovered.

Spain has recorded 10,935 fatalities and 117,710 infections.

Confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Germany increased to 91,159 with 1,275 deaths.

France has reported 6,507 deaths and 65,202 cases.

Iran on Friday announced 134 more deaths from the novel coronavirus, bringing the officially confirmed total to 3,294. Health ministry spokesman told a news conference that 2,715 new infections had been confirmed in the past 24 hours, taking the total to 53,183. 

As of 9am (0800 GMT) on Friday, a total of 173,784 people have been tested of which 38,168 tested positive in the UK. As of 5pm on 2 April, of those hospitalised in the UK who tested positive for coronavirus, 3,605 have sadly died, the country’s health ministry said in a statement.

Turkey has recorded 425 fatalities and 20,921 infections.

Confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Switzerland increased to 19,606 with 591 deaths.

Belgium reported a total of 16,770 infections of COVID-19 and 1,143 deaths.
