The total number of deaths from the COVID-19 pandemic worldwide has increased to 1,826,055 with the global confirmed cases reaching 83,917,606 as of 9 am BJT on Saturday, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University.

Current status (data as of 9 am BJT, January 2):

The total number of COVID-19 cases in the United States topped 20 million on Friday, according to the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University.

Another 53,285 people in Britain have tested positive for COVID-19, bringing the total number of coronavirus cases in the country to 2,542,065, according to official figures released Friday.

Chile's Ministry of Health on Friday reported 3,588 new daily cases of the novel coronavirus disease, the highest daily figure since July 5, raising the total caseload to 612,564.

Turkey reported on Friday 12,203 COVID-19 cases, including 1,908 symptomatic patients, as the total number of positive cases in the country reached 2,220,855, its health ministry announced.

Spain announced on Friday that entry for passengers travelling from the UK by air and sea will be prohibited till Jan. 19, according to the Official State Gazette.

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the African continent has reached 2,759,313 as of Friday, the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.
