The total number of deaths from the COVID-19 pandemic worldwide has increased to 398,321 with the global confirmed cases reaching 6,855,858 as of 9:30 am BJT on Sunday, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University (JHU).

The coronavirus pandemic killed 749 people in the United States in the past 24 hours, according to figures released Saturday by JHU. The latest deaths bring the total in the United States to 109,791, and there have been more than 1.9 million cases, according to a real-time tally maintained by the Baltimore-based university at 9:30 pm (0130 GMT Sunday).

Brazil' s total COVID-19 deaths have surged to 35,026, according to a tally by JHU.

Russia has confirmed 8,855 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, raising its total to 458,689, its coronavirus response center said in a statement Saturday. The death toll grew by 197 to 5,725, while 221,388 people have recovered, including 8,708 over the last 24 hours, according to the statement.

Another 204 COVID-19 patients have died in Britain as of Friday afternoon, bringing the total coronavirus-related death toll in the country to 40,465, the British Department of Health and Social Care said Saturday.

India has reported the fifth most number of COVID-19 infections, standing at 246,662 as of Sunday morning, according to data from the US-based Johns Hopkins University. The country has also registered 6,946 fatalities.

The Spanish Health Ministry on Saturday confirmed one more death from COVID-19 and fewer new cases. A total of 27,135 deaths from COVID-19 has been reported so far, said the ministry, adding that 67 deaths have been recorded over the past seven days.

Italy recorded another 72 COVID-19 victims in the past 24 hours, bringing the national death toll to 33,846, the Civil Protection Department said on Saturday. Total active infections stood at 35,877, a decrease of 1,099 from Friday. 

It is followed by Peru with 5,301 deaths from 191,758 infections, according to a tally by JHU.

France saw its overall death toll of the coronavirus pandemic rise to 29,142 on Saturday after it recorded 31 deaths in the last 24 hours, said the Health Ministry.

It is followed by Germany with 8,673 deaths from 185,450 infections, according to a tally by JHU.
