The total number of deaths from the COVID-19 pandemic worldwide has increased to 279,307 with the global confirmed cases reaching 4,023,539 as of 10:30 am BJT on Sunday, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University.

Current status (data as of 11 am BJT, May 10):

Chinese health authority said Sunday that it received report of 14 new confirmed COVID-19 cases on the Chinese mainland Saturday, of which two were imported cases reported in Shanghai.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez warned Saturday that the coronavirus pandemic remains a threat, lying in wait as the country moves towards easing its strict lockdown.

French health officials on  Saturday announced another 80 deaths from the new coronavirus, the lowest figure recorded over 24 hours since early April.

Turkey's COVID-19 cases on Saturday exceeded 137,000. Meanwhile, Iran witnessed a similar surge of coronavirus cases with the tally surpassing 106,000.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called Saturday for caution and expressed concern about loosening lockdown measures in Montreal, the epicenter of Canada's coronavirus outbreak.
