The total number of deaths from the COVID-19 pandemic worldwide has increased to 355,956 with the global confirmed cases reaching 5,707,163 as of 7 pm BJT on Thursday, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University.

The US coronavirus death toll passed 100,000 as the pandemic tightened its grip on South America, which is outpacing Europe and the United States in daily infections.

The coronavirus death toll in Europe crossed 1750,000 on Thursday, according to an AFP tally from official sources at 08h10 GMT. Britain has registered 37,460 dead, Italy 33,072, France 28,596 and Spain 27,118.
