Globally, as of 2:00am CEST on Tuesday, there have been 3,525,116 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 243,540 deaths, reported to WHO.

The outbreak has now claimed the lives of at least 71,022 people in the US, the most of any country. The US also leads the world in the number of confirmed infections with 1,203,673, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University as of 8:32 am BJT on Wednesday.

The total number of deaths in Spain rose to 25,613 after 185 people died of COVID-19 in the 24-hour period until 21:00 Monday local time (1900 GMT). The total number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Spain now stands at 219,329.

The coronavirus pandemic has claimed 29,315 lives in locked-down Italy, bringing the total number of infections, fatalities and recoveries so far to 213,013, according to the latest data released by the country's Civil Protection Department on Tuesday.  

The UK has overtaken Italy as the worst-hit country in Europe by the novel coronavirus, according to the latest official figures released Tuesday. Chairing Tuesday's Downing Street press briefing, Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said another 693 COVID-19 patients have died, bringing the total coronavirus-related death toll in Britain to 29,427. The number of confirmed cases rose to 196,240, according to Johns Hopkins University.

As of Tuesday, 25,531 people have died of COVID-19 in France, with 330 new fatalities registered over the past 24 hours, official figures showed. The number of confirmed cases rose to 170,687, according to Johns Hopkins University.

It is followed by Germany with 6,993 deaths from 167,007 infections.

Russia has confirmed 10,102 new COVID-19 cases over the past 24 hours, raising its total number of infections to 155,370, its coronavirus response center said in a statement Tuesday.

Turkey on Tuesday confirmed 1,832 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total number in the country to 129,491. The deaths from the coronavirus have reached 3,520 after 59 new fatalities in the past 24 hours, Health Minister Fahrettin Koca tweeted.

Confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Brazil have increased to 114,715 with 7,921 deaths.

In Iran, the tally of COVID-19 infections came closer to the major threshold of 100,000 on Tuesday by surging to 99,970, after 1,323 new cases were reported. Meanwhile, the death toll soared to 6,340, after 63 more fatalities were added.
