New York (People's Daily) – New York Comic Con 2018 officially kicked off at the Javits Center in New York City, as thousands arrived dressed up as their favorite pop culture character.

The event has seen tremendous growth over the last 12 years, going from fewer than 50,000 attendees in 2006 to an estimated 250,000 this year. ReedPOP, the convention’s organizer, said that that more than 700 companies participated in last year’s convention generating more than $100 million in revenue from events and merchandising.

Event Manager Kristina Rogers said, "Impressively, the New York International Comic Con has become more inclusive and grown rapidly over time."

While NYCC isn’t as big as its West Coast cousin, the San Diego Comic-Con International, it’s still a major event expected to reveal the latest news on comics, television, film, celebrities, cosplay, anime, books and much more.

The film presence this year, much like San Diego Comic-Con in July, isn’t as massive as it’s been in years past. Studios hosted panels and prepared trailers for upcoming and anticipated movies, including Peter Jackson’s “Mortal Engines,” and the new “Hellboy” franchise reboot.

With television dramas, DC Universe has already premiered the first two episodes of its upcoming gritty Teen Titans adaptation “Titans,” while Syfy showed off the pilot for its upcoming George R.R. Martin adaptation “Night flyers.”

Comics are a huge part of the show as well. Independent artists revealed their work in Artist Alley, and Marvel, DC Comics, Image, Dark Horse.

Book publishers hosted signings and panels from authors throughout the convention. Random House and Disney Publishing also held a bunch of panels for their upcoming work on new Star Wars or Stranger Things titles.

Fans from all over attended with the most sophisticated equipment, while some turned into their favorite characters.

From costumed heroes to scary villains and clever out-of-the-box cosplay, such as Batman, Superman, and Captain America, but also classic and cute anime characters from Japan, South Korea and other Asian regions.
