The train went off the track at a location near the state's Itakpe town, Sanni Abdulganiyu, an NRC train service coordinator in Kogi, said in a statement late on Sunday.

Rescue crew were dispatched to the scene immediately, and all passengers and crew members have been evacuated to a safe place, Abdulganiyu said, noting that there were no casualties as a result of the derailment.

Authorities are still trying to establish what caused the derailment, which led to a suspension of train service along the route, he said.
